Police officer could face criminal charges over fatal crash

A police officer could face criminal charges over the death of a 23-year-old man who was hit by a patrol car in 2019.

Watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said it had referred the case to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to see if charges should be brought.

Andrew MacIntyre Brown died and a 16-year-old boy was injured when they were hit by a marked Metropolitan Police car in Whitton Road, Hounslow, west London, on November 1 2019.

The driver of the patrol car was interviewed under criminal caution for potential driving offences and was also served with a notice of investigation for gross misconduct.

Two other officers present in the car at the time of the collision were also served with notices of investigation for misconduct and gross misconduct.

IOPC regional director Sal Naseem said: “Following thorough and careful analysis of the evidence, we have decided there is an indication an officer may have caused death and serious injury by dangerous driving and a file has been referred to the CPS.

“I am satisfied we have gathered all the available evidence and it is now for the CPS to consider whether to bring criminal charges.”

The IOPC will now decide whether any officers should face disciplinary proceedings.
