A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after a teenager was shot dead and another injured following an attempted burglary at a farm in the east Midlands.

Officers were called to the property in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, at about 1.20am on Wednesday and found a teenager with fatal gunshot wounds. The force said he was not the owner of the property.

A second teenager was found nearby with a gunshot wound and taken to hospital. Derbyshire police said he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, as was a man in his 20s after the vehicle he was travelling in was stopped on the A6 on Wednesday.

The suspect in his 50s is in police custody.

Police said they had initially received reports of a burglary at the property on Tuesday at about 3.30pm.

“At this stage we are keeping an open mind as to whether the two incidents are linked,” they said on Thursday.

The divisional commander, Ch Supt Dave Kirby, said: “We appreciate the impact that an incident like this can have on communities so we are grateful to all those who have helped during these early stages.

“Officers will remain at the scene today and for some time to come as the investigations continue.

“If anyone does have any information, we’d ask them to please contact us, in confidence.”
