Pictured: Barbie launches Kylie Minogue and Dame Helen Mirren dolls

The creators of Barbie have announced the launch of eight new dolls in honour of celebrities like Kylie Minogue and Dame Helen Mirren to celebrate the toy’s 65th anniversary.

Mattel will mark Barbie’s birthday on Saturday with the release of  “one-of-a-kind role model” figures profiling women “using their platforms for good”.

The line up includes Australian artist Kylie Minogue, who has been recognised for her “glittering career”, immortalised in an all red ensemble.

It also sees Canada’s Shania Twain recognised as the top-selling female country pop artist of all time and US actress Viola Davis, who has reached EGOT status, honoured for her philanthropic work.

The dolls’ release is also in celebration of International Women’s Day this Friday.

From the UK, Dame Helen Mirren, has been recognised as “an advocate for embracing and celebrating self-expression, aging and fashion”.

The 78-year-old’s doll is featured in an outfit she wore to the 2023 Cannes film festival and holds a mini Academy Award – an accolade she won for The Queen in 2007.

The final dolls will represent Lila Aviles, a Mexican director and screenwriter, Japanese model Nicole Fujita, Maria Gomez, an indigenous content creator from Brazil, and Enissa Amani, a German comedian.

Mattel’s dolls saw a doom in popularity following the blockbuster film released in July last year, which was narrated by Dame Helen.

The box-office smash surpassed the $1 billion (£784.4 million) mark to become the biggest film directed by one woman of all time.
