Network Rail warns of London travel disruption caused by heavy rain on three lines

Heavy rain is set to cause disruption in London this weekend with Network Rail warning of cancellations to mainline services.

Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink networks could be affected from Saturday afternoon when rain is set to lash the capital and into Sunday.

Rain is set to fall from this evening and into tomorrow, according to the latest forecast from the Met Office.

Annie Shuttleworth, of the weather agency, said: “If you’re in the south you may have woken up to some rain.

“You will probably see some further showery bursts of rain throughout this weekend.

“You could see some quite heavy, possibly thundery showers tonight.

“In the south it will be a much wetter night [than in the north] with outbreaks of very heavy rain.”

Despite this, the Met Office has not listed any weather warnings for the UK in its weekly roundup.

Network Rail said in a statement: “Heavy rainfall is expected on the south coast on the part of the network used by Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink services.

“Some strong winds are also expected on the south coast.

“This may affect journeys from this evening, 27 April, until the middle of the day tomorrow, Sunday 28 April.

“There could be some short-notice disruption caused by the weather, so please check journey planners before you travel.”
