A memorial bench plaque that stated "Huw Davies - used to sit here and shout 'f*** off' at the seagulls" has been removed by a council.

The unauthorised plaque was placed on a bench overlooking South Beach in Aberystwyth, Wales, dedicated "in loving memory" to Huw.

Historian James Vaughan tweeted a photograph of the memorial on Sunday, which quickly went viral and received hundreds of thousands of likes.

He wrote: "By some distance the best park bench memorial I’ve ever encountered".

He later tweeted that Ceredigion County Council were "spoilsports" after they removed the plaque.

Locals said they found the plaque funny as seagulls had a bad reputation in the area.

Alice Tucker told the BBC: ‘It is something I think quite a lot of people will sit and think when they see the seagulls – especially when they steal their food plenty of times.’

Other Twitter users responded to the post with their own local amusing plaques, showing off dedications from across the world.

They included a bench dedicated to someone “who hated this park and everyone in it” and one which said, “he loved ham”.

Another one was made in memory of a person “who liked to sit down”.

One user also sent in a bench message which read: “Sit with her - remember how she hated the outdoors."

One social media user said: “I must admit this Huw Davies sounds an amusing character.

"If this Park bench memorial helps people remember him well then so be it.”

Another added: “Oh fantastic, I wish I had known that man. I think we would've got on in lots of ways.”

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: “An unauthorised plaque had been placed, by an unknown person, on an existing bench within Aberystwyth Castle grounds.

"The plaque has been removed.”
