A man has been attacked by a knife-wielding assailant on a train in south east London.

The victim has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and a manhunt for the suspect was underway, police said.

Graphic footage of the attack, which took place on a train near Beckenham Junction shortly before 4pm, was widely shared on social media.

In the video, a hooded man wearing a face mask is seen lunging at another person on the floor with a large knife.

One passenger, who appears to be calling the police, can be heard screaming “stop it now” before saying: “I’m on the train to Beckenham Junction and this man’s stabbing someone on the train.”

Steve White, the managing director of Southeastern Railway, said it was a “very serious assault”.

He added: “We are supporting the police in the gathering of evidence. Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward.”

Police said no arrests had been made and the two men had been fighting as they boarded the train at Shortlands station.

Southeastern railway said services between Shortlands and Victoria via Herne Hill are currently being disrupted.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: “Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a man was seriously injured at Beckenham Junction today.

“At around 3.56pm today [March 27], we received reports of two men fighting while entering a train at Shortlands [railway station]. A man sustained serious injuries consistent with being stabbed.

 “Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Metropolitan Police Service and the London Ambulance Service, and the victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing and there have been no arrests so far.

“British Transport Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact BTP by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 397 of 27/03/2024.”
