Man falls from back of ute in alleged drink driving death

A man has died in the Northern Territory overnight after falling from the back of a ute.

At around 11.30pm on Saturday, Northern Territory Police received a report of a single-vehicle crash in which a man had died.

Police believe a ute was carrying seven people while travelling along Marindja Road in Rakula, about 70km away from Darwin, when a passenger in the tray fell out.

The 23-year-old male suffered fatal injuries and the victim was transported out of the area by others in the ute so they could get phone reception.

Police and St John Ambulance paramedics attended the scene.

A 35-year-old man who was driving the ute at the time of the incident allegedly had alcohol in their system, police said.

It is expected police will charge the driver on Sunday.

“The Major Crash Unit are currently on scene investigating," Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”
