A man in his 60s was run over by his own automatic car after he fell out of the vehicle and it reversed over him at speed.

Dramatic CCTV footage shows the moment the silver Audi A8 with its door open accelerates backwards off a road and towards a grass verge in Southampton.

The driver of the automatic Audi, in his 60s, fell out of the moving car and smashed into a yellow grit box – then got hit by his own car door.

The £15,000 2013 car then flew over a grass verge towards a footpath where children and parents had been walking to school just moments earlier.

It was eventually stopped from going any further by metal railings on the footpath.

The extraordinary scenes took place on Thursday just before 9am.

Injuries are serious but not life-threatening

Police said that the man in his 60s suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and no arrests had been made.

It is understood that the man was taken to hospital.

The crash left a trail of destruction behind with the yellow box torn and the tyre marks still visible on the grass.

A neighbour nearby who heard what happened and asked not to be named, said: “I was at home this morning and I heard a big bang, and I thought it came from upstairs’ neighbours.

“I didn’t think too much of it, it was only when I heard a commotion coming from outside that drew my attention.

“When I saw what happened I thought to check the CCTV and that’s when I saw the crash.”

‘It could have been much worse’

He added: “This was only a short time after children and parents had gone through the cutaway on their way to school so it could have been much worse.”

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called just after 9am on March 21 to a report of a collision in Furze Close, Southampton.

“This involved a silver Audi A8 and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man in his 60s, suffered a serious but not life-threatening injury.”
