A murder investigation has been launched after a man was stabbed to death in Bethnal Green, east London, on Sunday night.

Metropolitan Police were called to reports of a fight on Corfield Street at 8.20pm and found a man with a stab injury.

The 38-year-old died at the scene despite efforts from the London Ambulance Service to save him.

Police officers are working to inform the man's family. Formal identification is yet to take place.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course, the Met said on Monday.

Superintendent Alex Ogilvie said: “I recognise the impact this violent incident will have on the local community, especially as it happened in a residential street while many people would have been in their homes.

“We shall be supporting our colleagues in the Specialist Crime Command with their investigation, and you can expect to see officers in the area over the coming days. I encourage you to speak with them about anything you saw or heard, as well as any concerns you may have.”

There have been no arrests so far and police enquiries continue.

A crime scene remains in place.
