M4 closed as lorry carrying ‘thousands of bottles of wine’ bursts into flames

Part of the M4 has been closed after a lorry carrying “24 pallets of wine" burst into flames.

Dramatic images showed the truck alight on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge, leading to the westbound carriageway being shut on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted at about 3pm and the blaze was eventually put out.

The BBC reported the lorry was "transporting 24 pallets of wine", which is 84 cases and thousands of bottles.

The M4 Severn Bridge links England and Wales over the River Severn.

Avon and Somerset police confirmed there were no injuries, saying in a statement: "A lorry fire has closed the westbound carriageway of the M4 Prince of Wales this afternoon, Wednesday 22 June.

“Emergency services were alerted at about 3pm and police, fire and Highways teams remain on the scene.

“Travel disruption is affecting the M4 and M5 in our area so please find alternative routes if you can.

“We expect the bridge to remain closed westbound pending recovery of the vehicle, assessment of any damage to the road surface or bridge structure and any necessary repairs.”

National Highways confirmed one of its inspectors was on the scene, adding: “The fire has been extinguished and recovery of the burnt out lorry is taking place.

"An inspector is also on scene to assess damage to the bridge cables caused by the fire.”

Avon Fire and Rescue service tweeted: “The fire has now been extinguished.

“Crews remain on the scene moving the cargo and ensuring the scene is safe.”

Traffic Wales South said there was congestion in the area and drivers should plan ahead to avoid delays.
