Eleanor Stanier, active as a community organiser and councillor in Richmond upon Thames, taught me history between 1966 and 1968. With her blond hair and bright red mini dress she naturally stood out in a traditional girls’ grammar school. She was the most inspirational teacher, imparting great enthusiasm for her subject.

After she left to have her first child, she was kind enough to write to congratulate me on my exam results. I have never forgotten her.
Sally Atkinson

Eleanor Stanier had a delightfully expressive face, whether giggling with amusement at some revealing absurdity or signalling her deep dismay at the latest tale of corruption in high places. Serious or light-hearted, she was always good company.
