A four-year-old girl is being treated in hospital after she fell out of a moving car on a busy road.

The child fell out of the sliding door of a black Kia Sedona GS that was travelling along the A180 in Grimsby on Sunday, police said.

Shocked motorists said she fell in front of passing cars near Westgate roundabout at about 4.45pm. Some drivers rushed from their cars to help her.

Humberside Police told Grimsby Live she is a four-year-old from the Grimsby area.

On Monday, the force said the girl suffered “serious and potentially life threatening injuries”, and that she remains in hospital and is receiving treatment.

Police closed a section of the road as the girl received medical attention and traffic officers examined the scene. She fell on to the outside lane of the A180 dual carriageway.

Passing motorists described how they heard the girl screaming after she landed in the road.

One said: “She was screaming in pain. It looked horrifying. But she had someone holding her. Those cries were heartbreaking to hear.

“There were a lot of people who rushed over to help.

“The ambulance service were here very quickly and the police shut the road off."

Another driver said: “We saw the car coming the other way. The door was open. I hope she is okay."

Sergeant John Rickells praised members of the public who stopped to provide first aid.

“It was good that people stopped and helped," he said.

"It shows the good side of people and it all helps. We are also asking people who have not already spoken to us to contact us with what they saw and especially if they have dashcam footage.

“We are still looking for CCTV so we can establish the circumstances.”

Humberside Police officers carried out a number of safety checks on the Kia, videoing locks and the movement of the sliding door.
