Girl, 17, killed and teen fighting for life after Mercedes crashes into bridge in Manchester

A 17-year-old girl has died in a horror crash in Manchester city centre which has left two men seriously injured.

Cops were called after a white Mercedes struck a railway bridge at the junction of Mancunian Way and Temperance Street at around 11.45pm last night [Jan 10].

A 17-year-old girl has died after a Mercedes crashed into a railway bridge in Manchester city centre.

The teenager was the front seat passenger in the vehicle when it crashed at about 11.45pm on Monday evening.

She was pronounced dead in hospital.

An 18-year-old man who was sitting in the back seat is in a critical condition in hospital.

The 23-year-old male driver of the white Mercedes was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened at the junction of Mancunian Way and Temperance Street.

Greater Manchester Police said no arrests have been made and inquiries are ongoing.

The Mancunian Way was fully closed off in both directions for several hours as police, paramedics and fire crews responded to the incident.

The eastbound carriageway remained closed between London Road and Fairfield Street on Tuesday morning.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "Emergency services attended a serious RTC on Mancunian Way, Manchester, at about 11.45pm on Monday 10 January 2022.

"Officers were called to reports a white Mercedes car had struck a railway bridge near to the end of Mancunian Way.

"Sadly, the front seat passenger of the Mercedes, a 17-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at hospital.

"The 18-year-old male rear seat passenger was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in a critical condition.

"The male driver, 23, was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

"There have been no arrests and enquiries are ongoing.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young woman that has died."
