A woman who got drunk and threw a pint glass at a pub landlord when he refused to serve her has escaped jail.

Leah Brosnan, 29, hurled abuse at Roy Irving, who runs Edwards Wine Bar at Hadfield train station near Glossop, Derbyshire, when he told her she was too drunk to be sold another drink.

During her tirade, Brosnan threw a pint glass at Irving’s head, but it smashed on the wall behind him when he ducked out of the way.

Brosnan, of Glossop, then smashed up other items in the bar before fleeing across railway tracks.

At Tameside Magistrates' Court, Brosnan, admitted common assault and trespassing on the railway.

Tineka O’Mara, prosecuting, said: “[Brosnan] refused to leave the premises and threw a pint pot at the direction of the manager.

“Luckily, he moved and the pint pot hit the bar behind him and smashed.

“He was concerned for his own safety. If it had hit him, it would have caused significant injury.”

O’Mara said Irving was “quite scared” as the glass “could have caused him significant damage” and was concerned for himself and “other people in the bar”.

The attack took place on 13 April this year – just eight months after Brosnan was ordered to complete a nine-month alcohol treatment programme when she was arrested twice for fighting with police and going on a drunken rampage outside her home.

At the time she claimed she had anxiety and depression and insisted she needed help for her drinking.

Despite facing jail for the latest incident, Brosnan was instead ordered to complete another nine-month alcohol treatment programme and pay Irving £50 compensation.

Brosnan’s lawyer, David Feingold, said his client’s behaviour could in part be explained by her “very difficult upbringing”.

He said: “She was bullied, abused and it carried on when she went into education. She was very badly abused and there is a reference to her father’s suicide.

"She still suffers from PTSD [post traumatic stress disorder] in relation to the abuse and the death of her father.”

However, Feingold conceded that the incident at Edward’s Wine Bar was “not a pleasant offence”, adding: “Whether It was reckless throwing or whether it was aimed, it’s beyond her because she was in a state.

"But she still did it. The alcohol intake was her own fault.”

Brosnan was also fined £50 for trespass.
