A motorist stopped by police for driving on a busy motorway with a huge pile of wooden panels stacked on his roof has been ridiculed online.

The driver was pulled over on the M5 on Sunday when a motorway patrol car spotted his grey car laden with wood.

This photo shows the estate car with dozens of large panels strapped down with thin ropes.

Central Motorway Police Group tweeted: “Vehicle stopped after being seen driving along the M5.

“It’s a miracle this didn’t fall off causing injury to anyone and a danger to other road users. Driver reported - Vehicle prohibited.”

The force then created their own hashtag for the incident - #loadsafety.

Social media users were then quick to mock the “plank” driver in a stream of mocking replies.

Carl Pickering tweeted: “Maybe they were stolen panels and he was the fence?”

James Dixon wrote: “There’s a 100% chance the driver said ‘that’s not going anywhere’ when he tied an entire summer house to his motor.”

Anya Stapleton added: “Just proves what we all know about Audi drivers – absolute planks.”

Tony Neale said: "See the motorway jenga season has kicked off again...."

"Wooden believe it," wrote Matthew Bowater. "Long as he was on board... Not made to walk the plank."
