Death in Paradise fans render verdict on spinoffBBC

The Death in Paradise fans have spoken. The first episode of the show’s spinoff, Beyond Paradise, made its debut on BBC One tonight (February 24) and fans have rendered their verdict on the new show.

The premise of Beyond Paradise sees DI Humphrey Goodman and his fiancée Martha Lloyd, who have left Saint Marie and their London home behind, now temporarily living with Martha’s mother in Devon.

“As Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant, Humphrey joins the Devon police force and quickly makes an impression on its somewhat eclectic team.

“As Humphrey throws himself into solving a perplexing case of attempted murder, he and Martha navigate life's ups and downs as faces from the past, the decisions they make and challenges of setting up a new life put their relationship to the test,” concludes a synopsis.

The viewers of the show have praised the return of Kris Marshall as Humphrey Goodman, but they also couldn’t help make fun of the fact that most of the show, which is said to be set in Devon, was shot in Cornwall.

“Let’s see what this Beyond Paradise is all about then. As a Devon girl I’m going to judge them immediately on the fact that they filmed a lot of it in Cornwall,” said one Twitter user.

“Time to spot all the places in Looe I know in Cornwall that’s pretending to be Devon. Why not just say it’s based in Cornwall? Makes no sense,” said another user, adding a laughing emoji next to their tweet.

Many fans were happy to see Kris Marshall back, with one user saying: “Good to have Kris Marshall back as DI Humphrey Goodman. My favourite Death in Paradise detective. I’m enjoying Beyond Paradise. Robert Thorogood WILL have his Paradise Cinematic Universe!”

“Loved it! So good to have Humphrey back, and loved that it seemed like the detectives were in the crime as it was happening while explaining how it was done!” wrote another.

Fans were left feeling down about the tragic ending of the first episode, but still seemed excited to come back for more. Luckily, they only have to wait one week...

Death in Paradise series 12 airs on Friday nights on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer. A spin-off, Beyond Paradise, premieres on Friday, February 24.
