Dave Myers said filming with Hairy Bikers co-star Si King “was a dream come true” during his final television appearance.

The presenter and cook died on February 28, aged 66, nearly two years after he was diagnosed with cancer.

For 20 years, the pair produced popular television series and best-selling cookbooks based on their travels around the UK and beyond.

The duo’s final episode of the seven-part series Hairy Bikers Go West will be broadcast on Tuesday at 7pm on BBC Two.

Myers, who underwent chemotherapy throughout the filming for the 650-mile road trip along the UK’s west coast, told King: “Who knows what the future holds but for the moment, I’m living in the present, and it’s pretty fine.

“I’ve had a blast, lovely landscape, new friends and great food. And the two of us back together, doing what we do best.

“The west really will be a trip to remember. It has been amazing, love you”.

King, who was seen left visibly moved by Myers’s words, told viewers: “I’m just lost for words. It’s quite remarkable what he’s done.”

The final episode will see the pair visit Lympstone Manor in Devon, run by Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines.

In a preview, as they explored his vineyard, Myers said: “You know this is such a special trip for the pair of us.

“You know after the last 18 months and we’ve known you for a number of years now Michael and I can honestly say hand on my heart I couldn’t think of a better climax”.

As the episode drew to a close, King said: “Well, we’ve made it.’

Myers answered: “And it’s been tough at times. You know I’ve had chemotherapy all the time we’ve been filming, it hasn’t been easy, but we’ve got there you know and it’s just a wonderful feeling. Being here with you, I long for this.”

King responded: “We’ve done it, but more importantly he’s done it. He’s my mate but I love him like family, like a brother, and... I’m just lost for words. It’s quite remarkable what he’s done.

“This is a pay-off to your hard work, to your will, to your effort,” he added, as Myers admitted: ‘It’s a dream come true Kingy…”

An on-screen tribute played shortly after the end credits read:  “In loving memory of our friend, Dave Myers.”

Myers, from Barrow-in-Furness, had been a make-up artist for film and television before moving in front of the camera.

He met King in the 1990s and the pair went on to become household names, presenting dozens of television shows and selling more than six million recipe books.

In 2013, he took part in Strictly Come Dancing, and said he “loved every minute”.

His dance partner, Karen Hauer, said after hearing of his death: “Dave, you taught me to have fun and take on the day with a big smile. Rest well, my dear friend. I’m going to miss you so much.”

Myers announced in May 2022 that he had been diagnosed with cancer but kept the details private. “I’ve never gone on about what sort of cancer it is because I feel that’s my business,” he explained.

In a message posted online on February 29, King said: “I’m afraid I bear some sad news. Most of you will know Dave has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years.

“Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave’s wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home.

“All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu, whom Dave loved like his own.

“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words how I feel at this moment. My best friend is on a journey that, for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.

“I wish you God’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”
