Cyclist leads police on chase on motorway before officers make dramatic arrest on verge

A cyclist led police on a chase on the motorway before he was forced on to a verge and arrested.

They were spotted pedalling north in lane two of the M3 at junction 13 for Eastleigh at around 5.10am on Saturday.

Hampshire Roads Policing Unit officers attempted to get them to stop but they switched to the outside lane and continued.

That was when officers decided to force the cyclist to the verge and arrest him.

Dramatic images showed officers detaining the rider while he was on the floor.

The rider was arrested for causing danger to road users and suspected possession of a class A substance

Hampshire Roads Policing Unit tweeted: “Called this morning at 0510hrs to reports of a cyclist cycling in Lane 2 on the M3 at Jct 13... they did not want to stop for us, continued into Lane 3 and eventually had to be forced onto the verge area where the rider was detained.

“Rider has been arrested for causing danger to road users and suspected possession of a class A substance.”

Cyclists cannot use UK motorways under Rule 253 of the Highway Code.

Last June, an e-scooter rider was spotted trying to join a motorway with 70mph traffic.

West Yorkshire Police (WYP) released footage showing the man heading towards the M606 in Bradford while travelling at 15mph.

Officers intercepted the e-scooter rider before he caused an accident and posted a clip on Twitter to remind people of road safety rules.

WYP - Roads Policing Unit wrote: “Officers on patrol were shocked to see this E-Scooter on the chevrons trying to join a live motorway lane with 70mph traffic.

“Scooter seized and rider reported.

“Privately owned E-Scooters cannot legally be used on a public road/pavement and only on private land.”
