A British skier has died after crashing into a tree while swerving to avoid a group of people on a slope at a resort in the French Alps, according to reports.

Mountain rescue was alerted to the accident at around 3pm local time on Tuesday amid reports that a skier had left the piste and hit a tree at speed at the Acoriaz resort in Morzine.

The victim, who is yet to be identified but is believed to be 68 years old, was found unresponsive by rescuers and he could not be resuscitated.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, the MailOnline reports.

It comes weeks after five missing skiers were found dead in the Swiss Alps.

The group “froze to death” after trying to build a cave to protect themselves from the elements, according to rescuers.

The group were found dead near the famous Matterhorn mountain, while a sixth skier from the group remained missing.

The incident follows a string of incidents abroad involving British tourists.

A 72-year-old tourist drowned in front of his wife after being swept away on a beach in India on Friday.

A British dad is also feared dead after he vanished in the sea while trying to save his son from drowning while on holiday in Mauritius.

Last month a British tourist died in an off-piste skiing accident in the French Alps, according to reports.

The man, aged 50, is understood to have died after falling from height while descending a slope in the area of the popular resort of Meribel.

Local media reported the man was travelling “at very high speed” before falling from a height of several tens of metres.
