I’m so pleased to see that the National Gallery exhibition The Last Caravaggio is free (Review, 16 April). Now all I have to do is navigate the byzantine system needed to book a train ticket, get to a mainline station, and book an overnight stay in London. If only there was a way such exhibitions could be held in more central areas of the country, cheaper and more convenient for many of us. There are art galleries outside the M25.

• Re your article (How to store half a lemon – and 17 other ways to keep leftover food fresh, 18 April), the best way to store lemons is to cut them into slices, arrange on a small plate and put them in your freezer compartment. Transfer to a poly bag the next day and keep in the freezer. Add when necessary to your gin and tonic. What a delight!

• During a minor operation I had recently, the surgeon decided to play a selection of songs recorded by my famous namesake. Full marks to the doctor for retaining a sense of humour amid the mayhem besetting the NHS.

• Prejudice against the follicly challenged is unacceptable, and so is that against beard wearers (Letters, 19 April). People should be appraised on who they are and what they do, not how they appear.

• Why is carer’s allowance means-tested (Letters, 22 April)? Simple: so pensioners like me (68, carer for a 93-year-old) can’t claim it.
