The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie has shared his disappointment at the show not getting a second season.

The Disney+ superhero series was not renewed for another instalment after season one's finale, which saw Mackie's character Sam Wilson enter as the new Captain America.

Speaking to Radio Times to promote his new series Twisted Metal, Mackie reflected on his time filming the Marvel series and shared that he will miss spending time with the cast.

"I really enjoyed doing that show. I was actually excited to do a second season, just so me and Sebastian [Stan, who played the Winter Soldier] can get paid to hang out," he said.

"Because it's like me, him, and Daniel Brühl, it's kind of like the perfect storm of happiness. Anything I can do to hang out with Daniel, a dancing Daniel Brühl, makes me very happy."

Following the show's cancellation, Mackie's newly minted superhero will instead feature in the upcoming blockbuster Captain America: Brave New World — which wrapped filming last year.

In November 2021, Marvel producer Nate Moore teased a "fascinating" arc for Cap in the new movie, saying: "I think he's not Steve Rogers and I think that's a good thing. Because to me, this new Cap is Rocky.

"He's going to be the underdog in any situation. He's not a super soldier. He's not a hundred years old. He doesn't have the Avengers. What happens with this guy who announces publicly, without the support, 'I'm the new Captain America.' What happens next?"

"He's a guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy. So, we're going to put him through the wringer and make him earn it, and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed, out-everything," he added.

The upcoming film will also see the returns of Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly, as well as MCU newcomers Harrison Ford, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore and Seth Rollins.

Captain America: Brave New World has a release date of February 14, 2025. Meanwhile, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is streaming exclusively on Disney+.
