Mystery surrounding two-million-year-old stone balls unlocked

For two million years, ancient humans crafted stones into hand-size balls, but archaeologists couldn't figure out why, until now.

According to a recently published paper, the balls were used as tools to break into fresh animal bones and access the fatty and nutritious marrow within.

In other words, if a bone were a can of soup, these stone balls were like ancient can openers.
