Hit-and-run motorist admits killing young woman

A hit-and-run driver has admitted knocking down and killing a young woman after he failed to stop for police.

Quincy Anyiam, 26, from Wolfs Wood, Oxsted, Surrey, struck 20-year-old Anisha Vidal-Garner on Brixton Hill on February 19.

At about 9.45pm, a car sped off from police in Brixton Hill after officers signalled for it to stop, Scotland Yard had said.

After it failed to stop, it was then involved in a collision with Ms Vidal-Garner, a pedestrian.

The car again did not stop at the scene and was found abandoned nearby, police said.

Ms Vidal-Garner, from Epping, east London, died at the scene.

Two days later, Anyiam handed himself into a south London police station and he was charged.

On Tuesday at the Old Bailey, he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and dangerous driving.

Judge Anuja Dhir QC adjourned sentencing until May 5 for a psychological report to be prepared, a court official confirmed.

The defendant entered his pleas by videolink from HMP High Down in Surrey.

Following the fatal crash, the Directorate of Professional Standards and Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) was informed.

The IOPC went on to take the decision to independently investigate the incident.
