Piers Morgan has slammed Hugh Grant on social media, calling the actor "disgusting" for his comments on the recent General Election.

Mr Grant, a vocal opponent of Boris Johnson and Brexit, lamented the Prime Minister's landslide victory in last month's poll.

Speaking to AP Entertainment, the Notting Hill actor called the result a "catastrophe" before adding: "The country's finished."

Commenting on a clip of the interview soon after it was posted on Twitter, Good Morning Britain host Mr Morgan hit out at the actor over his views.

"Hugh Grant is so disgusting," tweeted the controversial Good Morning Britain presenter, "How dare he say Britain is 'finished'?

"The only thing that's 'finished' is this stuck-up arrogant twerp's credibility as any kind of political expert."

During the election, Mr Grant took to the streets with Lib Dem supporters campaigning to unseat Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.

The actor urged people to vote tactically to ensure the Conservatives did not win the election.

He told residents that a Tory victory would lead to the "catastrophe" of a no-deal Brexit.

Following Mr Johnson's landslide victory, however, Mr Morgan taunted the actor on social media.

He accused Mr Grant of "helping" the Prime Minister shortly after the results of the exit poll were announced last December.

Mr Morgan tweeted: "Congrats Hugh Grant & Steve Coogan – you helped get Boris a landslide."

He then replied to Grant's tweet of "there goes the neighbourhood" by saying "No, there goes your credibility.

"The British people listened to your democracy-wrecking garbage & told you to f*** off."
