Fog to clear for cool but dry New Year’s Eve
Thick fog which has shrouded much of the UK is due to fade by Tuesday morning, as the Met Office predicts a cool but clear evening for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Revellers will need to wrap up warm as they head out to ring in 2020, with Tuesday set to be a colder day for the whole country.
A north-south temperature divide means some areas of Scotland and eastern England could even see a touch of frost.
Maximum temperatures of 10C to 11C and cloudy skies are forecast in south-west England.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said weather warnings for thick fog which were in place on Monday would be lifted by Tuesday morning.
He said: “For people travelling to work on Tuesday, it’s not looking too bad really.”
He added that a cold front would be moving in following a weekend of balmy weekend – which saw temperatures reach 16.3C in the north of Scotland, a new UK record for so late in December.
“Monday was the last of the milder days, we’ve got a cold front sinking south west, and it’s staying grey and murky throughout the day tomorrow,” he said.
“For the start of the New Year’s Eve celebrations, most of the country will be dry.”
He added: “It’s going to be getting cooler across much of Scotland and the eastern counties of England.
“It’s looking like it’s going to be pretty frosty across these parts, whereas in southern and western England it’s looking cloudy.”
