CCTV appeal after father-of-one killed in hit-and-run crash

The family of a father-of-one who died after a crash involving a car and a van with cloned registration plates have urged both drivers to hand themselves in to police.

Aaron Wilson died in hospital after having a leg amputated following the collision in Longford Road, Coventry, last Wednesday.

The 29-year-old was trapped between a Vauxhall Zafira and a parked car after a stolen Mercedes Vito van hit the passing Zafira, shunting it into the stationary vehicle.

The Vito, bearing a cloned registration plate of KU09 CEK and known to have been stolen, immediately drove off and was found abandoned and burnt out in Grindle Road, while the occupants of the Zafira, also on cloned plates of FM57 KRG, gathered belongings from the vehicle and also made off.

CCTV released by West Midlands Police shows two people emerging from the Vito shortly after the crash.

Appealing for help to trace the drivers who fled after the accident, Mr Wilson’s partner, Katie Robertson, said she wanted to see justice for the family and their daughter Leila.

Speaking at West Midlands Police headquarters alongside Mr Wilson’s mother Irene and his close friend, Scott Good, Ms Robertson said: “On the third of December our lives changed forever when I received the devastating phone call that Aaron has been involved in an accident.

“Aaron was an amazing father, partner, son, brother and a friend to us all. This traumatic accident has broken our family in half. Aaron has left our three-year-old daughter, who he loved very much.

“I am appealing if anyone knows anything, to please come forward. We need justice for Aaron, for Leila, our family and friends. Just imagine if this was your family put in this position.

“Please come forward. Whether you were scared at the time, please come forward. You need to do this for our family.”

The family of Mr Wilson, who had three sisters and two brothers, say they have taken some comfort from the fact his organs were donated to help six recipients, including two children.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said he wished to trace the driver of an Audi, who stopped and helped at the scene, as a vital witness.

The officer said of the people who left the scene: “I need those drivers to come forward. They know they have been involved, they know we are investigating.

“This is your opportunity – get in touch with us sooner rather than later.”

A fundraising page to help Ms Robertson has so far raised around £4,600. Donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-loving-memory-of-aaron-wilson
