Motorists have been driving down the wrong way of the M5 to avoid queues following several road accidents on Saturday.

Authorities released pictures showing a number of drivers operating their vehicles recklessly.

This included a lorry driver blocking the road after doing a u-turn and motorists trying to access routes that had been closed.

Highways England spotted traffic driving the wrong way into Avonmouth after a collision northbound between J18 and J17.

It tweeted a picture of the offending driver along with the caption: "This is illegal. You are putting yourselves, our roadworkers and other road users at great risk."

Highways England also posted an image of a lorry driver blocking both directions as he attempted a u-turn, adding: "There is alot of congestion on the #M5 today due to multiple serious incidents.

"This does not however provide anyone with the ability or excuse to go through roadwork closures, or go down the road the wrong way."
