Family pay tribute to ‘doting dad’ killed at Tata steelworks

The family of a worker who was killed in a machinery accident at the Tata steelworks in Port Talbot have paid tribute to him.

Justin Day, 44, died from his injuries at the South Wales site shortly before 2pm on Wednesday, prompting an immediate investigation by the steel firm.

On Thursday, his family, including his wife Zoe and their children, released a statement calling the contractor a hardworking family man.

The statement said: “Justin was a family man who loved his family so much, he was hardworking to provide the best for his family.

“He was a doting dad to his daughter Keeley and granddaughter Lyla-Jay who he idolised.

“He was a passionate rugby fan and supported the Ospreys and Wales and had been looking forward to the World Cup.

“He was so proud of his sons Korey and Kaylan and enjoyed watching them playing rugby, Korey plays for Vadre youth and Kaylan Bonymaen U13s.

“He will be missed so much by his family.”

Friends of Mr Day, who lived in Llansamlet, Swansea, and worked for Mii Engineering based in Caerphilly, left tributes to him on a fundraising page set up to support his family.

A message on the GoFundMe page said: “Zoe and her family are the most amazing people I’ve ever met, so kind and would do anything for anyone.

“Justin tragically passed away in his workplace in an awful accident, I know Zoe would never ask anyone for any help at all but would help anyone, please spare anything you can for her and her family to help them through this tough time.

“Money will never replace their loss but will most definitely help them to keep a roof over their heads and help towards the funeral costs.”

Friend Wayne Sayce wrote on the page: “This family is close friends of ours who wouldn’t wish harm on anyone r.i.p mate.”

South Wales Police described the accident as an “isolated incident” and said it is liaising with the Health and Safety Executive, while Tata Steel said it has launched an investigation.
