Officer run over by car thief recovering at home after hospital release

A police officer who suffered “life-changing” injuries after being run over by a car thief will continue his recovery at home after being discharged from hospital.

Pc Gareth Phillips, 42, underwent surgery for his injuries and was in hospital for just over a month after suffering a shattered pelvis in the incident in Birmingham.

Mubashar Hussain pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to the traffic officer with intent to resist arrest after pinning Pc Phillips under his own vehicle.

Shortly after the incident, West Midlands Police said the BMW had been hijacked in Moorcroft Road, Moseley, at around 4.45pm and was reversed into the officer, knocking him down, before being driven over him.

Hussain, 29, of no fixed address, will be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on October 15.

In a tweet announcing the officer’s return to his home, West Midlands Police said: “Pc Gareth Phillips, our traffic officer who was badly injured when run over by a police car, has been released from hospital to continue his recovery at home.

“He’s still got a long battle ahead of him, and our thoughts remain with him and his family at this time.”
