Fans criticise 'disgusting' Meghan Markle exposé - 'Unbelievably awful'

Viewers have taken to social media in droves to share their outrage over a promo for 60 Minutes' upcoming 'exposé' on Meghan Markle.

The sneak-peek was shared in a tweet, in which the Australian current affairs show brands the Duchess of Sussex "insufferable" and suggests that the 38-year-old has "lost her sparkle".

60 Minutes' Meghan takedown

"#Megxit! How Meghan Markle lost her sparkle. From adored to insufferable in less than a year. What went wrong for Meghan, and how it affects hubby Harry. SUNDAY on #60Mins: Inside a Royal crisis. Can the ghost of Princess Diana save a fairytale?" the caption reads.

The story, which is set to air at 8.30pm this Sunday night, will see the programme's host Karl Stefanovic interview a panel of Markle critics including the royal's former friend, British TV presenter Lizzie Cundy, and commentator Katie Hopkins.

In the short clip, Lizzie, who reportedly met the future duchess at a charity dinner back in 2013, tells Karl about her "manipulative" ex-pal who was open about her desire to snag a "celebrity boyfriend".

Elsewhere, Katie slams the new mum as a "no one" who "wears bad clothes".

The promo also touches on the controversy surrounding Meghan and her husband Harry's recent private jet use, and suggests that the Prince's late mother, Princess Diana, has the potential to "save" the couple's public image.

Viewers slam Channel 9

The minute-long tirade has already stirred up controversy online, with viewers taking to Twitter to condemn the program's "character assassination" of the duchess.

Here is just a sample of the outrage against 60 Minutes:

"I have entered the text of this tweet into multiple search engines and every time it comes back as ' racist f***wits that can't fathom a British Princess could be mixed race'".

"She hasn't lost her sparkle but it appears #60minutes has. Looks like you interviewed #nobodies to put together a non story."

"Just say you hate her because she's black and have done with it."

"P*ss right off...stop it! Call it what it really is....character assassination by clickbait TV. Pathetic."

"Wow. This is what passes as entertainment in Australia? Disgusting."

"This is garbage."

"This is disgusting. Talk about bullying."

"These people are insufferable. This makes 60 Minutes Australia look bad, not Meghan."

"This is unbelievably awful. Shame on everyone that was involved in this tabloid crap."

Meghan's friend Jameela Jamil also chimed into the debate, calling the promo "absolute bottom of the barrel".

"Immediately we can dismiss this trash 'entertainment' as *any* form of 'journalism'," she wrote on Twitter.

Harry responds

60 Minutes' scathing take on the duchess comes days after Prince Harry responded to those who criticised the family-of-three for using four private planes over the European summer.

While many saw the move as hypocritical considering both Harry and Meghan's outspoken attitude towards climate change, the 34-year-old defended their choice of air travel as a means to keep his wife and child "safe".

The couple's celebrity friends including Sir Elton John - who last month supplied his own jet for travel to and from his luxury French villa - along with Ellen DeGeneres and Meghan's close friend Jessica Mulroney all came out in support.
