Van driver caused chaos during motorway rampage

A delivery driver caused motorway chaos after repeatedly crashing over a one-and-a-half mile stretch of the M6 in Birmingham, new video footage shows.

CCTV shows the red van swerving between lanes and hitting a number of vehicles, during the incident on July 1, before finally grinding to a halt on the hard shoulder.

The footage shows the Mercedes Sprinter van’s bumper flying off after smashing into a Nissan before driver Awil Hayow, 34, continues his rampage.

Hayow was also seen reversing across lanes and sending a Ford Transit spinning after swerving from the hard shoulder into lane one.

Other drivers had to take emergency action but Hayow kept going until he finally parked on the hard shoulder.

He adopted a boxer’s stance and resisted arrest when approached by police, as other vehicles passed by at up to 60mph.

Officers used incapacitant spray but Hayow only gave up when an officer armed with a Taser arrived.

Hayow, of no fixed address, refused to give a breath sample after he was arrested at around 2pm.

He has admitted dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen and obstructing a police constable.

Sgt Mitch Darby, from the Central Motorway Police Group, said: “This is a really bad case of dangerous driving.

“At no point did Hayow make any attempt to contact the emergency services to report the collisions, check on the other drivers or report the fact that his van was stationary in a live lane of traffic with vehicles driving towards it.

“He showed a total disregard for the safety of other motorists who were on the M6, and it is only down to pure luck that no-one was seriously injured or killed because of his driving.”

Hayow will be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on August 13.
