Hundreds of dead chickens cover busy M5 motorway

This gory footage shows hundreds of dead chickens splattered over the motorway.

The scene of devastation was caught on camera by passing motorists on the M5 - with some saying the smell was so bad it made them sick.

There were long tailbacks on the busy stretch near Exeter, Devon, and holidaymakers heading to the south west were caught up in the chaos as the road was closed to deal with the carcasses.

Devon and Cornwall Police said about 200 carcasses came from a lorry that led to around four and a half miles of queuing traffic and delays of 45 minutes.

Devon and Cornwall Police said but there is no sign of the vehicle that deposited the animals on to the road when they arrived.

Passenger Natasha Yates said: "The smell is revolting and we have been queued back from Taunton Dean services for over an hour.

"The sight of carcasses and innards was so horrible that it caused one motorist to nearly vomit. The couple, on their home to Paignton from Nottingham, started filming as they approached - and were shocked by what they saw.

The driver, who asked not to be named, said: "The chickens were already dead. We don't want to upset anybody.

"It wasn't so much the smell that upset me. It was the sight of all the dead chickens and their innards and giblets all over the road in front of me that made me feel sick.

"They were everywhere. It was really horrible."
