Boris Johnson voter 'staggered' by his LBC phone-in

James O'Brien's calls from disillusioned Leavers doesn't usually leave him and the caller struggling for words. But that's exactly what happened, after Anthony called in following Nick Ferrari's interview with Boris Johnson.

Anthony told James that he was "staggered" and was struggling to understand how he had been persuaded to vote Leave by the Tory politician, who is now tipped to become the next prime minister.

"I can't believe the interview," he said. "I thought it was awful. I'm almost wanting a grown-up to be interviewed. After that interview I'm lost for words."

The LBC presenter then asked Anthony, when it was during the interview that he changed his mind about Mr Johnson: "Almost straight away. He just wouldn't answer a question."

Mr Johnson has struggled to get his campaign back on track since police were called to a late-night quarrel at the home he shares with partner Carrie Symonds.

Avoiding scrutiny

The Tory front runner's campaign has also been stung by claims that he's avoiding debates and media interviews in order to escape scrutiny over his past.

During his 35 minute interview with Nick Ferrari, Mr Johnson was repeatedly challenged over a picture of him 'reconciling' with his girlfriend, Ms Symonds. The image is believed to have been released to the press by his campaign team, but speculation over when it was taken led to a defensive response from Mr Johnson.

The former leader of the Leave campaign was also asked about his Brexit policy, in which he tweaked his now discredited claim, that a no-deal Brexit would not lead to the imposition of tariffs on British exports.

The new Conservative prime minister is expected to be appointed on July 23rd.
