Eta Aquarid meteor shower peaks this weekend
The Eta Aquarids meteor shower will light up the heavens this weekend, and for once, it looks like you'll have a chance of seeing it - as the the weather forecast is clear skies across most of the UK.
The showers of 'stars' is produced from the tail of Hally's Comet as it sheds particles of ice and debris as it completes its orbit past Earth on its flight through the solar system.
When these particles hit the upper atmosphere they burn up creating the stunning light show known as shooting stars. The Aquarids will produce at its peak 30 shooting stars an hour which means there's a good chance you'll catch a glimpse.
The ideal time to improve your chances of witnessing the celestial wonder is just before dawn which means stargazers will need to be up and out of bed around 3-5am.
The Metro reported that Nasa advises stargazers: "To view the Eta Aquarids find an area well away from city or street lights. Come prepared with a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair.
"Lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible.
After about 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. Be patient— the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse."
