Science explains how bumble bees got their stripes

Scientists have found a gene that drives colour differences within a species of bumble bees.

This discovery helps explain the highly diverse colour patterns among bumble bee species as well as how mimicry -- individuals in an area adopting similar colour patterns -- evolves.

A study describing the gene was led by researchers at Penn State.
