Police probe sick reports that images of Emiliano Sala's dead body were shared online
A probe has been launched after reports that images of footballer Emiliano Sala’s dead body were shared online.
Photographs appear to show the Argentinian striker’s remains, believed to be taken at the Holly Tree Lodge mortuary in Bournemouth.
Sala died in a plane crash in January, while he was travelling in a light aircraft from Nantes to Cardiff after making a £15m transfer to play for the Premier League team.
His plane crashed into the English Channel on 21 January and was subsequently found submerged at the bottom on the ocean, north of Guernsey a fortnight later.
An inquest found that Sala died due to head and trunk injuries.
Commenting on the photographs, a detective told the Sunday Mirror: “We’re disgusted somebody did this.”
Officers believe that the person who shared the images could have broken into the Bournemouth morgue where Sala’s remains rest.
The detective added: “It is a very difficult time for Mr Sala’s family and they should not have to endure additional pain this shameful act will undoubtedly cause.”
The investigation comes just days after the tragic footballer’s father, Horacio Sala, died of a heart attack at 58.
Julio Muller, Mayor of Progreso, hometown of the Salas, said: “2019 has been very hard on us. I think Horacio couldn’t get over what happened to Emi.
“Every news he heard about the investigation was really tough for him.”
Sala’s remains were recovered from the downed plane in February, though the body of pilot David Ibbotson, 59, are yet to be located.
