Danny MacAskill: Success of first video still unbelievable 10 years on
Stunt biker Danny MacAskill has said he still finds it “unbelievable” that posting a video online 10 years ago triggered his global stardom.
The now 33-year-old uploaded Inspired Bicycles to YouTube on April 19 2009, which included footage of him performing tricks around Edinburgh.
The “breakthrough moment” has since been viewed more than 38 million times and seen him gain global recognition for his skills, and he now travels the world through his sport.
MacAskill, from Skye, said: “Ten years ago, the internet was very different – even the bike scene was very different.
“It was very much revolving around DVDs – yearly release DVDs – and magazines. YouTube was just beginning.
“Now it’s opened up a whole different era, a whole load of different possibilities for people.
“I was very lucky to be in there at the beginning with it.
“When we were filming around Edinburgh it was purely for ourselves.
“I wanted to make a video that maybe the bike scene would see and maybe appreciate – see our hard work.
“I never imagined in a million years it would have millions of views from people outside the bike scene and around the world.
“It’s really unbelievable, even to this day.”
Since 2009, MacAskill has produced several more videos, which have gone viral and been watched more than 350,000,000 times.
He has featured in high-profile publications, joined a Hollywood production as a stuntman, been nominated twice for the Action Sportsperson of the Year gong at the Laureus World Sports Awards, as well as for the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Award.
In 2012 he was given the honour of baring the Olympic torch during its tour in Glasgow.
This year, his Drop And Roll Show Live – a street trials show – takes to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at the Underbelly’s Circus Hub.
MacAskill added: “The film really kicked off a 10-year career that I couldn’t have imagined – I was working in the bike shop.
“I’ve been lucky to travel all over the world, see and do so many cool things.
“At the end of the day, I still enjoy riding my bike the same as I did back then.”
