The country where most people die because of an unhealthy diet

Uzbekistan has been named as the country which has the highest number of diet-related deaths in the world.

A global study has found that the former Soviet republic records 892 per 100,000 people a year, due to poor diets.

The country with the best diet in the world, according to the study, is Israel, which in contrast recorded just 89 per 100,000 people a year.

The study, published in the Lancet, found that 11 million people globally die because of their diet every year.

Astonishingly, it found that our daily diet is a bigger killer than smoking and is now involved in one in five deaths around the world.

The UK did not fare too well.

The study estimates that 14 per cent of UK deaths are related to diet, with 127 diet-related deaths per 100,000 people a year.

It said the biggest problem with the British diet was a lack of whole grains, fruit, vegetables and nuts and seeds.

The UK finished behind countries such as Belgium, France and Denmark in the study.

A global danger list found that dangerous diets consisted of too much salt, too little fruit and too few whole grains.

'We find that diet is one of the dominant drivers of health around the world, it's really quite profound,' Professor Christopher Murray, the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, told the BBC.

He added that the study showed that campaigners should start promoting healthy foods such as nuts and fruit rather talking about the harmful affects of red meat, sugar and fat.

Prof Murray also said that as well as knocking a couple of years off of life expectancies, people should also be aware of the greater risk of disease such as cancers and heart attacks because of poor diet.
