Tourists were seen fleeing from the edge of a lagoon afters the side of a glacier collapsed in Iceland.

The incident on March 31 created huge waves which were sent crashing towards the onlookers in the Jökulsárlón lagoon.

"This area is only accessible with mountain guides and everybody shown in the video had been previously instructed to immediately leave the beach if a calving occurs," said a witness who recorded the footage.

"Due to the sheer size and proximity it was a bit of a close call but everybody was safe and stayed dry."
