Dutch model Lotte van der Zee dead at 20 after 2 weeks in coma following cardiac attack

Lotte van der Zee, the young Dutch model who went into cardiac arrest two weeks ago, has died at the age of 20.

The blonde was on holiday with her family in Austria before suffering the sudden attack in February, said family members. For the past two weeks, doctors were keeping her in a medically induced coma.

"It is super unreal that our dear Lotte is no longer there," posted van der Zee's family on Instagram. "Our hearts are broken."

In 2016, van der Zee had been named the winner of the Miss Beauty of Overjissel contest and in 2017 she was named Miss Teen Universe in 2017.

With her internal organs failing, the family took her off life-support late on Wednesday, reported Dutch news website The AD.

"We had to let her go. It could not be otherwise," said van der Zee's mother, Eugeniek. "It was good like that; she has had to endure a lot in the past few days."

Van der Zee had been ailing the day she went into cardiac arrest and her health increasingly worsened. Her mother was present during the attack and able to resuscitate her.

The model was then rushed to a hospital in nearby Rosenheim before being flown to Munich, where more specialized neurological care could be offered.

"I can not understand this," wrote plus-size model Joann van den Herik on van der Zee's Instagram page. "Lotte was a beautiful, sweet, spontaneous girl and made this hard world a lot nicer and more enjoyable for me."
