One in six say first date ‘went sour when partner did not offer to pay’
One in six people have been put off a potential partner because they failed to pay or offer to cover the costs on their first date, a survey has found.
Some 15% of people rejected the idea of a second date for this reason, according to Barclays’ money-sharing app Pingit.
The research, released to coincide with Valentine’s Day, also found disagreements over money have had an impact on other relationships.
Nearly a fifth (19%) of people said they have lost a friend due to conflicts over money.
In an effort to avoid rows over money, nearly half (45%) of the 2,000 people surveyed across the UK would prefer to overpay their share of a bill than risk looking “cheap”.
Darren Foulds, managing director of Pingit, said: “The research shows that talking about money can still be a taboo subject among friends – with people losing mates and dates because of it.”
