A scheduled documentary on serial killers Fred and Rose West was set to air last night on ITV, but viewers were left puzzled after it failed to broadcast.

The programme, presented by Sir Trevor McDonald, promised the ‘real story’ behind the couple who between them killed at least 12 people between 1967 and 1987.

ITV said that the film had to be pulled, just hours before broadcast, due to ‘legal reasons’.

It is planned for broadcast at a later date.

It was set to feature veteran news broadcaster McDonald speaking to a former lodger at the West’s house in Gloucester, 25 Cromwell Street, which later became known as the ‘house of horrors’.

The Wests disposed of several dismembered bodies in the cellar of the house, and in the garden.

McDonald also speaks to family members, and to the sister of one of the West’s victims.

Fred West killed himself while on remand at HM Prison Birmingham, while Rose West remains in prison, having initially been sentenced to 25 years, but then being given a ‘whole life’ tariff in 1997.

The house at Cromwell Street was demolished in 1996.
