Manchester man skis past gridlock caused by icy roads

A man in Manchester managed beat the traffic and the icy conditions on the roads around Didsbury yesterday by strapping on skis and sliding to work.

University of Manchester student Gabrielle Sanderson, 20, was one of the amused commuters who filmed the skier at around 8:45AM and posted the video to Twitter: "There were quite a few people stuck at the bus stop since the traffic was blocked up," she told ITV.

"He was getting further than the traffic so I'd say he was pretty successful."

Photos posted a few minutes later seemed to show another skier, this one dressed in a bright orange jacket, joining the man.

Manchester Airport and the nearby Liverpool John Lennon Airport both closed their runways temporarily to get rid of heavy snow on Wednesday as wintery conditions caused havoc across many parts of the UK.
