Why the Titanic is disappearing

The wreckage of the Titanic could vanish completely by 2030 because of "hungry" bacteria in the ocean.

The once grand ship has been sitting 3800m below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean since 1912 — after it hit an iceberg and sank.

However, because of how deep the wreckage laid, it remained well preserved until it was discovered in 1985.

While it has been more than 30 years since it was found, now scientists don't think the remains of the vessel have much time left.

While deterioration has slowed, in 2010 proteobacteria were found on rusticles that had been recovered from the wreckage.

Scientists named the bacteria 'Halomonas titanicae' — and it is thought it could devour Titanic's remains.

Recent estimates predict that by the year 2030 the ship may be completely gone.
