Aldi plans expansion with eight new stores in Scotland

Supermarket chain Aldi has announced plans for expansion in Scotland which could create up to 200 jobs.

Eight new stores will open across the country in 2019, taking the total number of staff employed by the company in Scotland to 2,300.

The move will increase the number of Aldi stores north of the border to 93.

Richard Holloway, Aldi’s regional managing director for Scotland, said: “Next year will be extra special for us as we mark 25 years since we opened our first store in Scotland on Glencairn Street in Kilmarnock.

“It is fitting that in 2019 we will be replacing the existing Kilmarnock store with a new, larger format to help satisfy increased customer demand.”

Aldi said it also aims to increase its range of Scottish products to 450 in 2019.

Over the past five years, the retailer has seen sales of Scottish sourced products increase by 180%.
