Inquiry under way as two die in house fire

A man and a woman believed to be aged in their 80s have died in a house fire.

The blaze, at a property in Walkden, Salford, is not being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to the house in Edge Fold Crescent shortly before 3.50am on Saturday.

The two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police: “The fire is not currently being treated as suspicious.

“A joint investigation between police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is under way.

“Edge Fold Crescent is currently closed to traffic as a scene remains in place outside the property.

“Inquiries are ongoing.”

Four fire engines were sent to the scene of the blaze on the first floor of the semi-detached house, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

Ben Levy, area manager for Salford and Trafford, said: “It’s a tragic incident and first and foremost our thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved.

“Crews worked in difficult conditions alongside colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, but despite best efforts were unable to save the couple.

“It’s too early to determine a cause and fire investigators will be working closely with the police to find out what happened.

“At this stage there is nothing which suggests suspicious activity and we are treating the incident as an accident.”
