Scientist unravels 275-year-old mystery of comet with 6 tails
A scientist has unraveled the roughly 275-year-old mystery of a comet with six "dramatically fanned out" tails.
Observed in 1744, it went down as an inexplicable splendour.
A major step towards cracking the case came in 2006 with the arrival and satellite observations of Comet McNaught. It provided data used by a London PhD student to create a new technique for processing images - and used it to determine what was behind the disruptions in the comet's tails.
The rest is explained in our video above.
