Tram collides with lorry in Sheffield

A tram has collided with a lorry on the Sheffield Supertram system.

The incident happened in Staniforth Road, on the route between the city centre and the Meadowhall shopping centre.

Police said there are not thought to be any serious injuries.

The collision on Thursday afternoon happened just hours after the official opening of UK’s first tram-train service was launched between Sheffield and Rotherham – a service that utilises both the Supertram system and main rail lines.

In a tweet, South Yorkshire Police said: “We are currently dealing with a collision between a tram and a lorry on Staniforth Road #Sheffield.

“Road closures are in place. At this time no-one is thought to be seriously injured.

“Please avoid the area and plan alternative routes.”

Firefighters also confirmed they had been called to the scene.

Stagecoach Supertram said in a tweet: “Due to major incident at Staniforth Road trams from City will be terminating at Cricket Inn Road.

“Trams from Meadowhall will be terminating at Arena. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
