Kate dons Diana tiara for state banquet

The Duchess of Cambridge has worn a piece of jewellery associated with Diana, Princess of Wales to a state banquet held in honour of the Dutch king.

The Lover’s Knot tiara was Kate’s star accessory during the white-tie event staged by the Queen in honour of King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima.

Diana famously teamed the tiara with a white sequined dress and high-collared jacket by Catherine Walker – dubbed the “Elvis” look.

She also wore it in 1982 at a state banquet for Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, staged at Hampton Court Palace.

Kate wore the glittering diamond and pearl tiara at the Buckingham Palace state dinner on Tuesday night with an Alexander McQueen gown.

The piece was originally made for Queen Mary, the Queen’s grandmother, in 1914 by the House of Garrand, using pearls and diamonds belonging to her family.

Its design was taken from a tiara owned by Mary’s grandmother Princess Augusta of Hesse, known as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara.

Kate has worn the headpiece a number of times including at a diplomatic reception in 2016, and also at a state banquet for King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain when they visited Britain last year.
