Thomas Markle said he found out his daughter Meghan and Prince Harry were expecting their first child, when he was listening to the radio.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, the Duchess of Sussex’s estranged father said: ‘I was sitting in line waiting to cross the border when I heard the baby announcement on the car radio.’

He revealed the first thing he thought of was holding Meghan as a newborn in his arms, 37 years ago.

‘I thought, “My baby is having a baby.” It was a very proud moment.

‘I was filled with love, joy and happiness for both my beautiful daughter and my son-in-law. A new baby is a blessing and I look forward to seeing a little Meghan or a little Harry.’

Meghan was born on August 4, 1981 at West Park hospital in Canoga Park in the suburbs of Los Angeles.

Thomas and Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland divorced when she was six years old. Mr Markle, who worked as a TV lighting director, is now retired and lives in Mexico.

It is believed that Thomas has not had any contact with his daughter since the royal wedding in May. He was caught staging paparazzi photos for money and then pulled out of walking his daughter down the aisle, due to heart problems.

He and Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Markle have also given a number of interviews to the press.

Kensington Palace announced the news last week that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting a baby.

In a statement, they said: “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

A spokesman added that the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are “delighted” for the couple, and that Doria is “very happy about this lovely news” and “looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild.”

It was not known at that stage whether Thomas knew about the baby news.
